About B Corporation
B Corporation is a Multiple System Operator (MSO) that owns fifteen cable TV broadcast stations in Seoul and the Gyeonggi area in South Korea. B Corporation is growing to be a comprehensive multi-media group, providing digital broadcasting, high speed Internet service, VoIP, digital content, and bundled product lines based on the cable TV broadcasting business. As the world’s broadcasting and communication industries continue to expand due to developments in IT technology, broadcasting and communication companies are looking for ways to combine two industries into one. With this global trend in mind, the company has explored the possibility of enhanced comprehensive broadcasting and communication services by digitizing the old cable TV concept, previously limited to broadcast television. In addition, as a local Internet service provider (ISP), B Corporation continues to widen its business area by providing high speed Internet and VoIP services for their own customers.
The Challenge
• Reliable Internet Service
As a high-speed ISP, reliability was a key requirement for company's enterprise clients. However, as the Internet continues to evolve, malicious attacks using Worms, Viruses, DoS, and DDoS have been increasing as well. IT manager of the company identified that the existing L2 switch could not help block or prevent these attacks. Even though IT manager understood what the main problem is but the root cause couldn't be identified easily. Therefore, a solution to the problem could not be found. This led to customer dissatisfaction.
The Solution
• HDN L2 Security Switch: SG2000 Series
Due to the nature of the ISP industry, B Corporation could not implement solutions using NAC (Network Access Control) to control subscriber’s PC. Therefore, a stand-alone L2 security switch was the right option. B Corporation performed bench-mark tests (BMTs) across the various L2 switches in January 2009. HDN’s SG2000 Series satisfied all customer's requirements so B Corporation selected HDN SG2000 Series to supplement its reliable Internet service infrastructure.
The Impact
• Provides business continuity and quality of service
Unlike a residential ISP service, a short term service interruption can cause significant financial damages for ISP business customers. If security switch provides only security features but not guarantee service continuity, then a security switch is not enough to purchase. In this respect, HDN’s SG2000 Series was the only product that met these customer's requirements: providing security as well as ensuring business and service continuity. SG2000 Series would filter out only the hazardous traffic (i.e. DoS/DDoS) from the user’s PC and allow the user to maintain Internet service. Another main concern about implementing the security switch was system performance. Unlike other products in the market, SG2000 Series processes all security functions through a hardware mechanism using a separate ASIC security engine. This ensures that the quality of services provided by B Corporation will not be changed.
• Provides real-time monitoring
SG2000 Series provides real-time network monitoring that allows a network administrator to manage the entire network much more easily. Before SG2000 Series, B Corporation invested time and human resources to find and resolve any network problems. Once a ticket was opened by customer, a support person must go on-site and analyze all the log of L2 and L3 devices to find problems. SG2000 Series helps to simplify this process. A network administrator can detect any issues possibly raised from user's PC and notify him or her through real-time monitoring. SG2000 Series filters and blocks hazardous network traffic and notifies the network administrator through the Visual Node Manager(VNM). Then, administrator can notify what they found to the customer and instruct the users to follow the necessary steps. This will result in the customer satisfaction.
VNM (Visual Node Manager): real-time system monitoring
VNM (Visual Node Manager): attach occurrence statistics• Easy service operation and network management
SG2000 Series gives more simple installation rather than other L2 switches. Automated security features set the blocking rules when attack occurs and release the rules automatically when the attack finishes. This will simplify the work load that would otherwise be needed to be managed by the network administrator. In addition, the VNM provides many useful features with which the administrator can look over and manage the entire Internet service network effectively. Since all information collected through Security Switch is stored in VNM database, VNM can make a detailed CIO Report based on daily, weekly, and monthly. This will provide a comprehensive and convenient way of IT manager to control the entire network easily.
• Value to TCO -- no renewal license required
Since SG2000 Series help to prevent any problems in advance, overall maintenance cost can be decreased dramatically. In addition, other traditional switches require the annual renewal of the maintenance service or license but SG2000 Series doesn't ask on-going payment and service renewal.
• Prevents the information leakage
Personal information leakage through ARP -Spoofing is becoming a huge concern. Public places such as Internet cafés require careful attention, because the login credentials for gaming sites can be stolen in the middle of transaction SG2000 Series blocks ARP-Spoofing attack before the leakage is happened without any limitation. This feature can also be used for VoIP network.
