VIPM for IP Management and Network Security

The GANGNEUNG YEONGDONG COLLEGE (GYC) was founded in 1963 and is located in the center of the North-East Asia; East Sea rim region. With the 49 years of history, tradition, and the geographical location, GYC has developed into one of the leading colleges in Korea, specializing in high-level education combined with the real field experience. GYC has continuously been developing new educational programs to meet current industrial standards through the industryacademic
partnership. To successfully accomplish this partnership program, a reliable and safe network environment was necessary. HanDreamnet approached GYC to help improve GYC’s internal network security environment with HanDreamnet’s security switch (SG2000 and SG3000), and Visual IP Manager (VIPM).
The Challenge
• Performance, Security, and Management
GYC made the commitment to upgrade its outdated network infrastructure. Network security with performance was a major concern. GYC was able to manage and block attacks from the internet through its external network. However, various security issues rose from the internal network area. That was affecting GYC’s IT works negatively. GYC was looking for an effective solution to resolve these issues by building up the internal network security and management system.
GYC first started with the SG2000 Layer-2 Security Switch and the SG3000 Layer-3 Security Switch which can provide advanced performance as well as reliable internal network security. After an intense performance verification process, GYC decided to implement the solution with the SG2000 and the SG3000 and was able to successfully block hazardous traffic and attack from their internal network.
GYC was also experiencing other major issues, such as unauthorized clients easily connecting to the network and IP conflicts due to improperly managed IP addresses. In addition, remote access was not being managed properly either. Contractors with zero or minimal access rights could connect to the internal network and execute commands.
To resolve all these issues, a solution for network access control (NAC), IP address management, and remote access was seriously required. HanDreamnet’s VIPM was able to provide a single solution that could resolve all these issues at the same time.
Director Yang, Jun Mo, Senior Network Engineer at GYC stated, “There were frequent IP conflicts caused by students using random IPs that often caused system failure of the entire network. We needed a better and proactive IP management system.” Director Yang continued, “VIPM was the only solution which could provide us with effective IP management, authentication and the ability to work with our existing security switches.”
The Solution
• Security implementation through advanced access control and authentication
VIPM provides top level security that manages IP addresses, verifies IP vs. MAC addresses, and switch ports. VIPM blocks any illegal and unauthorized connections. For example, employees without sufficient access rights will not be able to change the port or connect to other departments. IP address usage for guests or temporary users can be limited to a certain period.
• User-friendly Installation and Management
Unlike other IP management solutions, VIPM can be easily installed and integrated into an existing network environment with security switches in use. VIPM does not require the Probe to be installed and managed. Director Yang explained, “VIPM is a great solution that provides the IP management, authentication, and access control. For all these, you only need to install one server.” Along with the IP management, VIPM’s ability to work with existing security switches provides various useful features such as detecting and blocking hazardous traffic, analyzing network status information, and tracking and reporting. With VIPM, the entire network can be monitored.
• Remote Access Control
For enhanced security and effective management, direct connection to a device or server on the network can be blocked. VIPM can be configured to allow user access only through VIPM. Commands that negatively affect the whole system (such as reboot or shutdown) can be prevented from use. VIPM also stores command history for future tracking purposes.
The Impact
• Reliable Internal Network Infrastructure
GYC has successfully built an effective and reliable internal network infrastructure using HanDreamnet’s advanced integrated IP management system (VIPM). As a result, GYC was also able to implement an appropriate security policy. Director Yang added, “VIPM provides not only basic IP management but also the ability to locate where the issues and errors are and troubleshoot them.” He continued, “While enhancing internal network security using security switches, we will continue to use the IP management and authentication solution.” GYC and HanDreamnet are working very closely to provide the enhanced network server to the students and employees.
Why HanDreamnet's VIPM?
VIPM is a great solution that provides the IP management, authentication, and access control. For all these, GYC only needed to install one server since GYC was already using HanDreamnet’s security switches. Along with IP management, VIPM’s ability to work with the existing security switches provides various useful features such as detecting/blocking hazardous traffics, analyzing network status information, tracking and reporting.
Looking Ahead
GYC no longer has to worry about managing their IP addresses even while the number of students and employees continues to increase.
